Seamless Attenuating Technologies (SATECH) is a Washington-based manufacturer specializing in the development and marketing of SmartCells©, a new generation of cushioning technology. The SmartCells technology has broad application in many markets where improving safety and reducing fatigue, stress, impact shock, and vibration are critical factors. Applications include the industrial work place for relieving fatigue and improving productivity in standing workers, and the senior care market for reducing fall injuries.

Since the late 1980s, the SmartCells technology has played a vital role in creating safer work or play surfaces. Company representatives played a key role in helping to create standards for injury prevention and fall protection in playgrounds. The 2-inch thick SmartCells structure achieved critical fall heights over 6’ according to the ASTM F1292 standard, meeting Consumer Product Safety Council requirements for cushioning under select playground equipment. Original patent protection for the SmartCells structure was sought for a wide variety of surfaces including helicopter landing pads, sports surfacing and playground cushioning.

During the 1990s the Company focused on creating surfaces to improve the safety and performance of participants in field and gymnasium sports and became known for its leadership in incorporating post consumer waste and recycled rubber in the fabrication of its products.

As SATECH embarked on the 21st century, it created a new generation of cushioning technology by designing new SmartCells structures and applying the technology in innovative ways. After an exhaustive review of published scientific literature on cushioned surfaces for standing/walking workers, SATECH created thinner, optimized SmartCells structures. The research indicated that several critical characteristics should be combined to achieve maximum fatigue relief for standing workers. For example, the elastic modulus of the material should be between 0.6 and 0.9 MPa (Mega Pascals) and should also incorporate a responsive balance of stability/instability and resilience/shock absorption as well as other factors, which all have been included in the design of the new optimized SmartCells structure for standing/walking workers. These factors can be reviewed in the published document: Nine Questions to Ask before Buying an Anti-fatigue Mat. New applications also include the creation of mat-less anti-fatigue flooring solutions, which are particularly well adapted to pharmacies, labs and airline environments.

The new SmartCells structures are not only optimized for fatigue relief but also provide effective solutions for both preventing falls and protecting individuals from serious fall-related injuries. The SmartCells technology creates a remarkable dual-stiffness flooring solution that does not impair balance, by providing a stable surface for normal activities which ‘softens’ under impact to provide fall-impact protection. The SmartCells cushioned flooring technology is the subject of a variety of clinical studies to further quantify its many benefits as fall protection flooring to reduce risk and liability for hospitals and long-term care providers.
